THE COLORADO PRE-RELEASE PROGRAM
Project: THE COLORADO PRE-RELEASE PROGRAM
Sponsor: Colorado Department of Corrections
IPS Staff: David Altschuler
Purpose and Approach
The Colorado Department of Corrections embarked on an effort to restructure and reform an existing Life Skills Program in 13 adult prisons across Colorado. Dr. Altschuler advised the Department on its restructuring and reform of this newly named Pre-Release Program (PRP). He reviewed PRP in terms of its goals, objectives, design, training curriculum, policies, standard operating procedures, and im-plementation details. The curriculum consists of 10 modules available to imprisoned offenders prior to their release. Topics include identification (e.g., social security number, driver’s license), housing, em-ployment, transportation, money management, education, healthy lifestyles, family and support sys-tems, victim awareness, and living under community supervision.
Results
The Colorado Department of Corrections reported the results of this program in, “Community Re-entry Pre-Release Handbook,” (First Edition 2008).
