August 2009 Field Day at Walden Circle Community Center
On August 29th, 11 students from IPS participated in a back-to-school field day at the Walden Circle Community Center in West Baltimore. Working at different stations, IPS students painted faces, organized relay races and kickball games, made henna tattoos, and supervised t-shirt decoration. IPS students also worked with community volunteers to set up games and clean up at the end of the day. The event was organized largely by second-year, Kelly Biscuso (MPP 2010), who has run the community center for the past year as part of the Shriver Peaceworker Fellows Program. Roughly 50 residents of all ages attended the field day.

September 2009 Build with Sandtown Habitat for Humanity Chapter
There are few tasks as satisfying as helping to build a house. On September 12th, 8 IPS students with various levels of carpentry experience worked with the Sandtown chapter of Habitat for Humanity on constructing the interior of three houses in the Sandtown-Winchester neighborhood of West Baltimore. IPS students measured, cut, and hammered to install floorboards and cabinet frames. One particularly skilled first-year, Megan Kenny (MPP 2011), built an entire doorway.

Upcoming Service Events!!!
In November, we will be cooking dinner at The Baltimore Station, a transitional housing program in South Baltimore. The date and time of this event are still to be determined. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Amreena Hussain at amreena.hussain@gmail.com.
The IPSSA community service committee is always looking for volunteers to plan and organize community service events. If you would like to organize an event, please contact Miriam Greenleaf-Miller at miriam.greenleafmiller@gmail.com.
Our students helped Parks & People with their annual fall tree sale. Parks & People offers native/adpated trees at a discount rate to Baltimore residents. It's a fundraiser for P&P, as well as a community greening program. The trees are pre-ordered and customers pick up the trees on a Saturday in October. IPSSA helped P&P verify orders and load trees into people's vehicles. IPSSA also helped with break down and clean up after the event.
