CURRENT INTERNATIONAL FELLOWS IN URBAN STUDIES, 2009-2010

Fabrizio Guzzo earned his Ph.D. in Sociology, Urban Studies, in January 2007 from the University of Calabria (IT).  His dissertation compared the balance in urban regulation between competitiveness and social justice strategies in Barcelona and Lyon.  He will continue this research in Baltimore and one other U.S. city.  Dr. Guzzo earned a Master’s in Urban Management from Erasmus University (NE) and Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona and a Master of Science in Local Economic Development from the London School of Economics.  Before his fellowship, Dr. Guzzo had been serving as a lecturer in regional economics and in local development in the University of Calabria’s Faculty of Economics.  Previously, he has served as a consultant for a pilot project on youth, creativity, and local economic development at the Ministry of Public Administration and Innovation; and for other local development projects in the Calabria region.

Lukas Smas earned his Ph.D. in Human Geography from Stockholm University in 2008.  His dissertation examined transaction spaces – the configuration of consumption and city form.  He will continue this research at IPS, looking at the ways that global and local processes affect commercial and retail property development, planning, which in turn affects city form and function.  He will compare and contrast an emerging consumption center in downtown Baltimore to an area of downtown Stockholm.  Dr. Smas had been serving as a lecturer in the Department of Human Geography at Stockholm University before his fellowship.  Previously, he served on research teams that compared the knowledge economy in eight Nordic regions, and another project that looked at Swedish cities in the context of national, European, and global networks.
