FINANCIAL AID

Deadlines

January 15 Application for the Master of Arts in Public Policy program due to the Institute for Policy Studies.

April 1 Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) due to the federal government.

April 15 Application for loan assistance due to Johns Hopkins University Office of Student Financial Services.

Financial aid is awarded to graduate students who demonstrate intellectual promise in the field of policy studies through past academic performance, GRE test scores, and previous relevant work experience. Financial assistance for students is available in several forms.

A large number of MPP students receive tuition scholarships awards for both years of study. Most scholarships are renewed for the second year provided the student's academic performance is good.

Research and Teaching Assistantships

Faculty and project managers at the Institute for Policy Studies hire students to assist with their research or related activities. Assignments are made after the student has accepted the offer to study at Johns Hopkins and has had interviews with faculty members. Students work up to 20 hours a week depending on their schedules and project needs. Students interested in being considered for an assistantship should apply for the federal work-study program through the Student Financial Services Office at Johns Hopkins. Second-year students serve as teaching assistants in several core courses. The primary role of the teaching assistant is to evaluate student assignments and to be available for individual and group tutoring during the semester.

Fellowships

Foundations often help to fund special fellowships for MPP students in particular specialty areas. Most recently, such fellowships have been available for students interested in nonprofits, workforce development, and urban policy. The amount and length of these awards may vary. Applicants should describe how their career goals and past experiences qualify them for a departmental fellowship in a personal statement.

Student Loans

Loan programs are available for graduate students. Applications for loans arranged through the University are due by April 15 of the previous school year. Information and application materials are available from the Student Financial Services Office at Johns Hopkins University.

Additional Scholarship Sources

Information about the many outside scholarships from private organizations is available through a free "Fast Web" scholarship search online at www.jhu.edu/~finaid. All students interested in applying for financial assistance must contact the Student Financial Services Office at (410) 516-8028. Because funds are in great demand, students who wish to be considered for aid must submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to the federal government by April 1.
