Engagin American Muslims in Policy
Amreena Hussein, MPP '10

A new Gallup poll finds that American Muslims consider themselves to be thriving, and yet large numbers say they do not feel content. Is that any wonder, when Muslims traditionally have been excluded, or have excluded themselves, from social and political involvement in this country?

Making housing affordable
Community land trusts offer a budget-friendly way to put homeownership in reach for more Marylanders

By Lauren Mohlie
February 22, 2009

Two years ago, Maryland banned new ground rents in response to abuses uncovered in an investigative series by The Baltimore Sun. Now, a group of legislators wants to allow the creation of some new ground leases, but with a benevolent purpose: to promote affordable housing.

By Amy Lunday
Homewood

Crime is down and property values are up in the area near The Johns Hopkins Hospital where East Baltimore Development Inc.'s $1.8 billion revitalization is well under way, according to a study by five students in the university's Master of Public Policy program.

As the capstone project in the course Policy Analysis for the Real World, students examined Baltimore housing and crime statistics as well as census data to observe changes that have occurred in the area beforeand after EBDI's acquisition, demolition and construction began six years ago.

Instead of Senator bailout, try free-market solution
By Matthew Maronick

Growing up in northern Homeland, I saw my first film at the Senator Theatre at 10. I went four times in four days to see Dick Tracy and got sick from eating too much popcorn. During breaks from college and the Peace Corps, I regularly took in screenings at the historic theater and made an effort to be an ambassador for the Senator, as Tom Kiefaber advocated to patrons before each performance. I even took part in the 2007 campaign to save the Senator from the auction block, going door to door in the neighborhood to collect small donations and get the word out to area residents.

10/29/08 - MPP Student, Ben Nathanson participates in Baltimore Alley Gating and Greening Program

For the last four years, Community Greens has worked with a number of Baltimore stakeholders to pass a community-friendly alley gating and greening ordinance. Mayor Shelia Dixon, Deputy Mayor Andrew Frank, the Mayor?s Office of Neighborhoods,Representative Pete Hammen, Councilman Jim Kraft, the Patterson Park CDC, the Patterson Park Neighborhood Association, Hogan & Hartson law firm, and University of Maryland Law School were instrumental to the success of this ordinance.

The ordinance allows for residents to legally gate and green their alley ways, thus making Baltimore one of the first cities in the country to allow the creation of new ?commons? via citizen action. Residents across the city are now empowered to reclaim alleys ?traditionally blighted urban spaces -- and thus stabilize their blocks by reducing crime, increasing property values, and encouraging civic engagement. Furthermore, these alley greens create a cozy sense of place, give children safe areas in which to play, and offer adults much needed respite. The Baltimore alley gating and greening ordinance is an important component of Baltimore community development.
