The Johns Hopkins Institute for Policy Studies (IPS), working with
the University of Maryland, organizes briefings for newly elected
members of the Maryland General Assembly every four years.
IPS works with the Department of Legislative Services and the University of Maryland to shape the agenda, recruit speakers, brief legislator-moderators, and provide an overview that enables participants to appreciate the inter-connectedness of issues.
IPS faculty participate as panelists in sessions including education and training
and juvenile justice. Other Johns Hopkins speakers, including President
William R. Brody, address the relationship between universities
and economic development, the balance between environmental and
economic development goals, and health care issues. Thirty-five
newly elected senators and delegates participated in the orientation.
